Painting Your House? Choose the Right Paint
By: Guy Starbuck
Painting the home is one of the easiest ways to bring some color and freshen up a tired and used home. It can be done fast and the process is easy as well as convenient and affordable. Rohm & Haas Paint Institute, the acknowledged experts in the field, suggests the following points to consider when painting a room in your house:
Color: They say, that every home tells a story. For that matter, the color chosen for painting your home will ultimately reflect the personality of its users. Red for instance, represents energy. Too much of red however can prove hazardous to your health, as it is known to increase blood pressure, heart beat as well as energy levels of the body. It could be because of this that red is such a favorite color for bed rooms where the color instills intimacy and passion. Interestingly, it is very good for dining rooms as it is known to enhance appetite. Watch out, weight watchers!
Significance of some other popular home décor colors is as follows:
Orange: Excellent for living rooms as this color promotes warmth and friendliness.
Yellow: Dark foyers and ill-lit hall ways can get a cheerful look with this color as it is an attention grabber, but in a positive way!
Blue: This color is known for its calmness and tranquility, an inevitable favorite for bedrooms.
Green: Again, green always calms and soothes frayed nerves. This color is suitable for kitchens, bed rooms and living areas where the family comes together.
Quality: It is a bad decision to compromise on the quality of paints which you buy. You must ensure that you buy the best quality of paints which you can afford. Better the quality better is its ability to resist chipping, discoloration and ugly stains.
Sheens: To get the moist attractive effect after the painting is complete you must choose paints which are glossy. Because of its ability to retract light, even a small room seems to have expanded and starts looking larger. You must be careful though, as it shows up any imperfection on the surface of the walls.
If you live in a house which is not very recent, try flat paints, which can easily keep wall cracks and worn out surfaces hidden. Though they hide all the ugly areas of the walls, remember these paints are difficult to clean and are not recommended for use in areas where there is heavy traffic.
Semi gloss paints are ideal for rooms which have heavy traffic of children. Surfaces painted with this type of paint are very easy to clean and maintain. But if the rooms are brightly lit, then semi gloss paints might cause a glare.
Paints with eggshell and satin finish, are the most costly, though they have a good spread, are washable and provides a silky smooth finish. They are long lasting too.
When painting a room, the two main concern areas are: what you want the room to be and who would be its occupants. If the room is a quiet retreat for you, a flat paint is good enough. But if you are painting a busy family room, where you expect a lot of traffic, then you ought to select satin finish.
